One swipe through photographer Paul Sunga’s Instagram grid reveals a portfolio that is impressively diverse, but unified by his artistic mission: to create spaces in which others can shine and be seen in their true light. Striking snapshots of A-list celebrities on the red carpet are aligned with dreamy, sensitive close-ups for beauty campaigns; sleek stills of high-fashion models sit alongside moody shots of figures on the Hong Kong streets, illuminated from behind by the neon lights of the city.

The one constant throughout Paul’s work is clear: each of his subjects become luminescent in his lens, radiating confidence and authenticity. It is this unique talent, and his acute eye for style, that has whisked Paul from Hong Kong and across the globe to shoot some of the biggest campaigns in fashion and beauty, to cover fashion weeks for Metro Society, and to lend his coveted expertise and vision as a brand consultant.

PAKT sat down with the fashion photographer and creative director – known fondly around town as ‘Paul S’, and for his ‘70s-inspired looks – to discuss his style and inspiration behind and beyond the camera.

1) Describe your style in 3 words.

On-trend, stylish, smart-spender.

2) Less or More?

More, haha!

3) What’s the most meaningful item in your wardrobe?

I’ve recently begun to appreciate the sentimental value of items in my wardrobe. The two most meaningful pieces I own are diamond rings passed down from my dad. One is especially special; it was originally a set of diamond earrings from his grandmother, which he transformed into a ring. The other is a horseshoe diamond ring that my dad wore in the 70s. These rings hold so much history for me, and I consider them staples that I wear to any event.

4) What’s the most-worn item in your wardrobe?

You can usually catch me wearing tinted sunglasses, whether it’s during the day or at night.

I find they’re an effortless accessory that adds a stylish touch, plus they help me hide any evidence of late-night parties! They’re actually a great hack when the lighting isn’t flattering for photos at events, too.

5) What’s your go-to outfit?

My go-to outfit is a tailored black suit with a sharp lapel. It’s the perfect hassle-free choice that can be styled with a turtleneck, a dress shirt, a simple T-shirt, or even nice sneakers.

I truly believe a black suit should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe.

6) What’s on your current fashion wish-list?

The LV Takashi Murakami 2008 Keepall 55 Bandoulière two-way travel bag is at the top of my wish-list. I wanted it back in the 2000s, but as a college student focused on paying for books and tuition, it wasn’t feasible. Looking back, it might have been a good investment!

7) Who are your style icons?

Richard Biedul, Warren Alfie Baker, Ralph Lauren.

8) Who would be your dream collaborator and why?

My dream collaborator would be Mike Amiri. I attended the Amiri Spring-Summer 2025 show, and the entire production had an incredible vibe. The collection perfectly aligned with my aesthetic, so collaborating or even doing a shoot for them would be a no-brainer. That would truly be a dream come true! Let’s manifest it!

9) A recent shopping find is…

I recently discovered Edwin Denim, specifically their Japanese selvedge denim. I got the new uni-wide trousers, which are high-waisted and wide-legged. They fit perfectly and have a cool retro vibe. Dark denim is so versatile; I can dress it up with a blazer or dress it down with a graphic tee and sneakers. I’ll definitely be rocking these for years to come!

10) If you could have anyone’s wardrobe, whose would it be and why?

I would choose Pharrell’s wardrobe. He’s such an icon, and we’re probably the same size! His first show with LV two years ago felt like attending the GRAMMYs, showcasing those striking runway looks. Just imagine the variety in his wardrobe — from jewelry and suits to shoes, it’s probably insane!

11) If a museum asked you to donate one item from your wardrobe that represented you, what would it be?

I would donate one of my tailored suits paired with tinted sunglasses.

These pieces are staples in my wardrobe that I love to mix and match for events and parties, reflecting my personal style perfectly.

12) What will we never find in your wardrobe?

I used to own a sweater with donuts as prints, it was cool at the time! I have no idea where it is now.

13) What is your favourite fashion project that you’ve worked on?

Last year I worked with Sony Hong Kong on the launch for the new 85mm 1.4 GM lens. I produced 2 reels which I poured my heart into. On the back end side of the shoot, I was creative director, producer, stylist, talent and hired a production team. These projects make you grow and feel super accomplished. My theory for any project is to make it look like a million dollars.

Paul and Coco Rocha.

14) If you could go back in time, which fashion era would you choose and why?

I’d totally pick the 70s! I’m obsessed with all the looks from that time – tailored suits, flared trousers, and that glam vibe. As a fashion photographer who loves to attend events and stay stylish, the 70s had such a fun, bold energy. It would be amazing to soak up that atmosphere and capture all those incredible moments!

15) Who would you invite to your dream fashion dinner?

I would invite Mike Amiri, Pharrell, the Yeti brothers, and a few of my best friends. Curating a dinner with such talented individuals would be amazing, but it’s important to ensure everyone gets along. I envision it more as a cocktail party than a sit-down dinner, as I prefer to mingle and connect with everyone throughout the evening!

16) What are your favourite tunes to get ready to?

Anything from Apartment Life Paris to a Youtube channel.

17) What are your top 3 accounts to follow on social media?

18) What are your favourite apps?

Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok.

19) What’s the best fashion advice you have received?

Confidence is key. Walk into the room like you own it! Don’t worry about what others think—most people are focused on themselves anyway. So, prioritise yourself and your own style!
